The Bengali film industry has come to a grinding halt as the Artists Forum and the Federation of Cine Technicians announced an indefinite strike starting Tuesday. This unprecedented move follows the tragic and mysterious death of young actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, who reportedly drowned during a shoot at Talsari beach on March 29. On Sunday evening, the Technicians Studio in Tollygunge turned into a sea of protesters as industry stalwarts, including Prosenjit Chatterjee, Rituparna Sengupta, and Kaushik Gangopadhyay, gathered for an emergency meeting to demand accountability and rigid safety protocols.
The strike, supported by over 4,000 artists and 7,000 technicians, highlights a deep-seated fear regarding the lack of security on film sets. Shantilal Mukherjee, General Secretary of the Artists Forum, stated that the fraternity feels "insecure" and cannot continue working under conditions where a life can be lost so easily. The industry is demanding a mandatory safety manual for all production houses, ensuring that medical aid and professional life-safety measures are present during high-risk outdoor shoots.
The emotional weight of the gathering was palpable as superstars like Abir Chatterjee and Isha Saha stood in solidarity. Prosenjit Chatterjee emphasized that Rahul’s death has united various organizations like IMPA and the Federation, raising a collective voice against negligence. While director Kaushik Gangopadhyay acknowledged the financial strain a strike would cause for daily wage earners in the industry, he maintained that the fight for "humanity and truth" regarding Rahul’s death must take precedence over professional commitments.
